Ren tries to go back to his normal life after his fake execution, posing as his twin brother, also named Ren, but the funeral arrangements are difficult when there is no body, Monsieur LeClerc is cheaper than the regular priest and the coffin is filled with anti-tank bombs.moreless

    "Superb"
Rene's biggest pickle ever as he has to be his own twin brother to make stop people being suspicious that he's still alive. Lt. Gruber starts getting guilty over having to shoot Rene, he's clearly not cut out to be a german officer. Apart from the bluffing which is onvolved him being the corpse as well as having to weight the coffin, this is hardly the most interesting episode except for what has to be one of the best ever endings with the funeral cart rolling down the hill and therefore setting off the landmines weighting it and leading to sudden explosions getting dirt first all over Helga then Herr Flick which leaves even Helga cracking up while Flick's serious but bemused face is priceless.moreless

  • QUOTES (9)

    ADD QUOTES
    • Rene: Oh colonel, do you really think this will work? Colonel VonStrom: Of course! You look exactly like yourself! Rene: (sarcastically) You are very reassuring colonel.

    • René: Who is this Monsieur Maurice? Edith: He owns the hotel grand place and a cafe. René: Why does she want you to marry him? Fanny: He has a bigger one than you have. Edith: But Rene does more behind the bar. Yvette: This is true.

    • (In the hen house) Fairfax: Carstairs... that cockerel hasn't taken his eyes off you for the last hour. Carstairs: I suppose sitting in this position, he thinks I'm going to lay an egg. Fairfax: I wish you would. I'm dashed hungry.

    • Herr Flick: Were there any peasants present at the execution? Col. Van Strohm: A few, Herr Flick. Herr Flick: Did you take their names? Col. Von Strohm: Did you take their names, Hans? Cap. Geering: Uh, I think there was one called Bobby.

    • Fanny: Edith? What are you going to do about the airmen in my wardrobe? Edith: There are no airmen in your wardrobe. We have hidden them in the hen house. Fanny: Airmen in the hen house? Sometimes I think I'll go round the twist.

    • Fanny: Now that René is dead, have you found his will? Edith: Mamma, he is not dead. He is down below. Fanny: Ah, well. The life he led, I am not surprised. Now, Edith, you must marry again. Why do you not marry Monsieur Maurice? He owns the hotel grand place. He has a café... Edith: Mamma, René is not dead. Fanny: He has a bigger one than René.

    • Col. Van Strohm: Ah, Helga, sit down. Have you seen Herr Flick of the Gestapo? Helga: Yes, I carried out your instructions. I told him Rene has been shot, and his twin brother has arrived from Nancy to run the cafe. Col. Von Strohm: Did he believe you? Helga: After some interrogation. Col. Von Strohm: Why did he interrogate you? Helga: It was raining so we decided not to go out.

    • René (About his fake twin brother): Yes, we are both from Nancy. We're just a couple of Nancy boys.

    • Yvette (rejecting a proposed inscription for Rene's tombstone): Excuse me - may I say something? They shot him. You cannot have "Sadly Missed."

  • NOTES (2)

    ADD NOTES
    • The Colonel has come up with an ingenious plan - now that Rene is officially dead, he tells everyone that Rene's newly arrived identical twin brother, also called Rene, is now in charge of the cafe. Naturally, Rene is not impressed, but Flick, Klinkerhoffen and the rest of Nouvion swallow the story, and so for the rest of the series, our hero Rene Artois is pretending to be his own brother from Nancy.

    • Kenneth Connor makes his debut appearance as Monsieur Alphonse.
