Literally picking up immediately after the end of episode 2.6, the silk balloon with the two airmen lifts off in the air, and the French folk return to the cafe to sigh with relief. The balloon takes off amidst German flak but the wind shifts and they end up crashing back into the Cafe, where Rene hides them inside moose heads in the pool room.

General Erich von Klinkerhoffen takes command of the area due to all the Resistance activity. The Colonel has hidden the world's first cuckoo clock (shown back in the pilot) inside a bust of his head, but Hans sets it working and ends up beating it into submission to stop the ticking. Von Klinkerhoffen assigns the Colonel to seduce Edith in hopes of learning more about the Resistance, and the Colonel passes the mission on to Hans.

The Resistance is aware of Von Klinkerhoffen's reputation as a vicious fiend, Herr Flick is unhappy that Von Klinkerhoffen has interfered in Gestapo affairs, and the Colonel and the Captain don't like his usurpation of power, so everyone tries to kill him at a Kaiser's Birthday Party arranged by the Generals' new ADC, Lt. Gruber. Herr Flick picks the blowdart death pipe of the Katari tribe, the Resistance picks dynamite inside the birthday cake (with a candle as the fuse), and the Colonel picks a poison pill in the wine.moreless

Without duobt the best of an incredible show. It may not have crabtree in but that doesn't matter as we have the show's speciality of silly schemes all together with one target, the general. You have the resistance with the dynamite in the cake. The Colonel with the poison in the wine and the gestapo with the poison dart. All of which go wrong in various ways causing Rene to moan 'not in my cafe' quite a lot so he has to stop all the attempts. The whole farcical scene is summed up by this exchange between rene and the captain: 'Do you not see? That if we kill him with the pill in the till, by making with it the drug in the jug, you need not light the candle with the handle on the gateau from the chateau!' To which Rene replies with the classic and immortally understated line of 'the simple plans are always the best'.moreless

  • TRIVIA (3)

    ADD TRIVIA
    • Goof: The action picks up immediately from the end of the previous episode (2.6) when we left the gang waving goodbye in relative daylight. But now it is pitch dark.

    • When Capt. Geering takes the jug with the drug to the table we can clearly see one full bottle of wine, and one mostly full bottle on the bar. When we see them next the mostly full bottle is empty, even though the other wine jugs were taken straight from under the bar, and not filled.

    • When Lieutenant Gruber mentions that General Klinkerhoffen is related to the "Kaiser", he is referring to Hitler and not to Kaiser Wilhelm II as is the common for this term.

  • QUOTES (5)

    ADD QUOTES
    • Colonel Von Strohm: I expect you think I had that bust made of myself out of vanity? Captain Hans Geering: Well, it did cross my mind and then I thought it was so lifelike that it could not be vanity.

    • Colonel Von Strohm (on proper Axis Etiquette): One of the first things you learn in military academy is never to tell a General when he has a chicken on his head!

    • Colonel Von Strohm (concerned that the General will find the cuckoo clock): If Von Klinkerhoffen hears my head ticking, he will think I am a bomb!

    • Edith: Without your glasses, you are even more attractive. Capt. Hans Geering: So are you.

    • Capt. Hans Geering: Do you not see? That if we kill him with the pill in the till, by making with it the drug in the jug, you need not light the candle with the handle on the gateau from the chateau!
