Richard drops a bombshell on the firm when he announces that he and Liza are engaged, with plans to wed in the coming month. Both pick each other for their first spouses, and announce that if it doesn't work, there's always divorce. Ally reveals her own shocking plans shortly after, further stunning the firm. She resigns effective immediately, and is planning on moving to New York, Maddie's previous home. It seems, after a health scare and visit with a psychiatrist, that Maddie is having social difficulties and pressures with school and friends, causing physical issues. The solution? Move Maddie back to New York, with friends and previous school.
Members of the firm handle all of the news in different manners. John speaks his piece to Richard, but refrains from talking with Ally. Richard insists that Ally be there for his wedding to Liza, and plans to marry in the office the following day, to ensure Ally will be there, in case Maddie's situation does not allow Ally to return in June for the actual wedding. Ally doesn't want to talk about any of it with anyone, claiming there's no time.
Even with the appearance of Renée, Ally doesn't divulge. Ally continues to ponder the past, and her history with the firm, notably with Billy. Richard and Liza take their vows, with the aid of a minister with a fainting disorder, who requires a harness to keep awaking. When speaking their vows, the two suddenly become more serious, and show that they are taking this step for real, and not because of age, boredom, or other rationale. They state their true love for each other.
While Ally fantasizes about herself as the bride, saying "I do" to Billy, Larry, Victor, whomever... Richard thanks Ally for teaching him to be open to the insanity of love. Georgia later attends the reception, prompting more memories from Ally's past. The two are on good terms, but haven't spoken lately. She asks Ally about leaving the office, and the memories of her own office, including Billy. Ally still contends that it's just walls, nothing special, still in denial. John then comes to talk with Ally, and gives her a parting gift of a necklace, made from materials from the World Trade Center. Both are moved, and cannot put in words what they're feeling. They don't need to. They rejoin the group downstairs, where Elaine, Renée, and Vonda are performing, "My First, My Last, My Everything" for Richard and Liza.
The bar is treated to a surprise, compliments of Nelle, of Barry White appearing on stage as well. The group dances together one last time, as the newcomers at the firm look on. Ally takes a moment alone outside and is greeted by a vision of Billy. He asks why she summoned him, and she thinks it is to tell him goodbye, as well as the firm. He reassures her as best he can, and tells he that he knows, from "up there" that everything works out for Ally in the end. She tells him goodbye, for good. The rest of the group comes out to say goodbye to Ally, as it is time for her flight.
She professes her love for each of them-Nelle, Georgia, Richard, Elaine, Renée, and John. Billy is standing with the group when she looks back for the last time. In a voice-over, Ally states that when thinking back, some of her happiest times were the saddest, so that means this is all going to be good, otherwise she wouldn't be crying.
