Almighty Debt

Show Summary

Almighty Debt is part of CNN's Black In America, a special which looks at the financial issues in the black community in America. Indicators like unemployment, home ownership and foreclosures, wealth, and educational attainment are all signaling that the African-American financial foundation is in bad shape, and is getting worse at rates higher than other races in America. The story is told through the eyes of the First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, New Jersey. The church has it's own problems, as do all of the members of the church who are struggling financially. African-American communities rely on their churches as institutions of support for their community, and the special looks at how this church is helping its 7,000 parishioners survive the current financial crisis. In the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, everyone is hurting in these poor communities, and the church is uniting them to make the best of what they have. Join Reverend Dr. Deforest "Buster" Soaries, who tries to fight debt from his pulpit, believing that debt is the new form of slavery for African-Americans. With people losing jobs, homes going into foreclosure, and students struggling to pay for a good education, the church has a difficult task in delivering the help that it would like to. See how this community deals with today's difficult financial challenges in CNN's Black In America: Almighty Debt.moreless
