Almost Live with Ross Shafer

Show Summary

A local show on Seattle's NBC affiliate KING 5, Almost live with Ross Shafer was a low budget local talk show that followed the same format as the Tonight Show. Back in the days of only three networks and before cable was a threat, this show was put on to fill a 30 minute block in the early evening that would normally have gone to a syndicated game show.

The formula was simple and is still widely used by late night comedy shows today. Ross Shafer would come out and do a few silly jokes. Then we would get a bit of sketch comedy and then Ross would briefly interview some Hollywood type that was visiting Seattle that week. Simple, to the point and done in 30 minutes.

The show was not great entertainment, but passable local fare. What came out of it, however, Seattle's "Almost Live" with John Keister was fantastic. It is for that reason this show is more than just a footnote in local Pacific Northwest broadcasting history.moreless
