Is Alphas taking on a startling resemblence to Mutant X?

I really like Alphas a lot. However, sometimes when I am looking at Alphas, I feel like I am watching a revamped 2011 version of Mutant X. In Mutant X, we had Jesse, Shalimar, Emma, Brennan (and other Mutants with special powers) led by Adam Kane (human). Here we have Gary, Cameron, Rachel, Bill, and Nina (all with special powers) led by Dr. Lee Rosen (human). In both shows:

    1) There is a battle amongst their kinds to determine how the future will be shaped

    2) There is a person with special powers that has been around over 100 years that is pulling the strings (Adam Kane prime/Stanton Parish)

    3) Both leaders are in search of others like their team, trying to protect them from dangerous people, and steer them in the right direction

    4) The Government is trying to hunt down both teams, study them, and turn them into weapons

    5) Each group is not known to the public

    6) In the first season and the last episode of both shows, each storyline involved at some point the possibility of the group being exposed to the public. In Mutant X, they were caught on film using their powers in "Dancing on the Razor" and at the very end of the show, Mutant X destroyed the disk. In Alphas, Dr. Rosen exposed the team and others like them to the world on a TV broadcast in "Original Sin" at the very end of the show.

I can go on but, do you also see the many similarities that I see?

    I welcome your thoughts...

I can agree with your comparisons, but what is your point? Every show is similar to every other show in some way. The themes are meant to reflect the human condition in whatever situation. I can draw comparisons with Alphas and Sanctuary. Both just revealed intelligent mutants/non-humans to the public at large. Government in both shows is intent on controlling and using the mutants to further their agendas. And, in both shows there are factions of mutants at odds with each other as well as with ordinary humans. These similarities do not mean their story lines will be identical.

My point is that you can compare apples to oranges but the more you peal away to heart of the matter (excuse the horrible pun), the dynamics will begin to be dissimilar. This is not the case between Alphas and Mutant X.

The similarities between Alphas and Sanctuary mostly come with how each mutant/abnormal is handled, introduced to the world, and viewed by the public...which I expect to be very similar. These elements will always be consistent with any Sci-Fi series where there are groups that exists that are different from humans due to human nature. However, the basic dynamics bewteen the two shows are totally different:

    1) Sanctuary is made up of a network of safe houses all over the world for abnormals...each location working together but also independently, whereas Mutant X had only one safe house.

    2) Sanctuary has no evil version of itself or established group causing mayhem under one leadership, whereas Mutant X had Mason Eckhart and his group.

    3) Sanctuary team is composed of both abnormals and a human with an abnormal in charge, whereas Mutant X team was composed of all Mutants with a human in charge.

    4) Sanctuary abnormals appear to naturally exist, where as Mutants from Mutant X were created as a result of a drug.

I could go on. All of the basic dynamics of Alphas and Mutant X, beyond how each mutant/abnormal is handled, introduced to the world, and viewed by the public are almost exactly the same.

Team structure, Total Members, Leaders, and intra-team Dating Situations, Main Antagonist, Abnormal/Mutant ability includes longevity and so on.

Therefore, it is true that there will be similarities between different sci-fi shows but when most of the basic dynamics of two shows are the same and the episodes start resembling each other, it makes you wonder about the originality of the writing.
