This had great sound editing and cinematography
  • This is my favorite episode mostly because I know what it feels like to be trapped in a ball turret.

In the early fifties I was in a Navy patrol bomber flight crew that patrolled the Korean coast for ten hours in search of submarines. This was an old WW2 prop driven bomber with a big round ball turret in the nose. This nose gunner sat there for hours with his knees tucked under his chin. There was a small hatch in the back of the ball where you crawled in and out but only when the guns were pointed forward. On patrol my best friend was in the turret for hours on end while I was sat comfortably on the flight deck operating the electronic equipment that made it possible for us to find submarines. I often swapped positions with him for a short time just to let him stretch his legs. I had mild claustrophobia and the guys in the crew knew it so one day as I was moving the turret around like a kid in an arcade, someone pulled the circuit breaker that powered the turret. The guns were pointed full starboard and I was locked in. I didn’t know what had happened but my first thought was what if we had to ditch at sea. There was no way I could get out. In this episode of Amazing stories I was on the edge of my seat for thirty minutes. I knew what the guy in that turret felt like.moreless
  • The moving story of a WWII gunner more than earned its incredible critical acclaim.

A young man is given one of the most dangerous assignments of the war: belly gunner. That is just what it sounds like: a lone airman with just a couple of guns to defend him, in a round glass chamber on the bottom of the plane. He must spend the whole flight crouched in the shell, and due to the exposure of the compartment is at constant risk of becoming someone else's target.

The whole expedition is dangerous enough. Suddenly the gunner is stuck in his seat, and the landing gear are flummoxed.

It might take a miracle to save the lives of the brave men.

They say the pen is mightier than the sword. In this case, it's mightier than accidents of fate and the skills of the enemy.moreless
