  • Rolly slips and falls at the bank, and immediately the deacon sees dollar signs. A settlement of $250,000 is finally offered, but Rolly is fine and not interested in the cash.

This is Jester Hairston's episode all the way. He is used more in this story than any others during the first season. It's fun to see how active he is, and how a man in his 80s could be just as 'with it' as anyone else. In fact, there's a great scene in the church office where he proves his vitality by doing a dance with one of the sisters. But what makes this episode marvelous is the interplay between Hairston and star Sherman Hemsley. We get the idea that Ernie and Rolly have long been friends, but sometimes they are adversaries. When Rolly is injured, the deacon uses the situation, not out of concern for his buddy, but as a means to line all their pockets with a bogus lawsuit.
