The final year of 'Amen' gets underway. There is a noticeable decline in the quality of the scripts this season, since the departure of former headwriters Arthur Julian and Eric Cohen. Established characters like Cassietta and Inga have been dropped without explanation. And as the season continues, new characters are added in an attempt to keep the show fresh. Some of them work (Clarence) and some of them don't. Of course, Sherman Hemsley, Clifton Davis and Anna Maria Horsford continue to delight audiences as the deacon, reverend and Thelma, respectively. • At the beginning of season 5, the show has lost head writers Arthur Julian and Eric Cohen, who helmed 'Amen' in its earlier seasons. There is a noticeable difference in the quality of the scripts. The ratings drop, and the show is cancelled by NBC at the end of the season.

    • There were a few significant cast changes during this final season of 'Amen.' The deacon's amorous housekeeper Inga, played by Elsa Raven, just sort of disappears and is never mentioned again. Also, more notably, original cast member Barbara Montgomery no longer appears as sister Cassietta Hetebrink. She had jumped ship to star in a short-lived sitcom on ABC called 'Married People.' Like Inga, Cassietta's departure is not mentioned and her absence is not explained.
