The deacon is hired to represent a man who claims to be the real Santa Claus. When it becomes clear that Ernie does not believe in Santa, his client fires him. Meanwhile, Reuben's mother visits for the holidays, much to Thelma's chagrin.
This is a two-part holiday episode that borrows from the classic movie 'Miracle on 34th Street.' This time Kris Kringle is named Nick St. Nicholas (played by William Windom), and he needs the deacon to represent him in an assault and battery case. Other veteran TV actors are on hand: Ron Glass in the recurring role of the defense attorney who happens to be Ernie's long-time nemesis; and William Lanteau as the judge. There are some cute moments with Sherman Hemsley's character who doesn't believe in Santa and must have his faith restored. Meanwhile, there's a subplot involving Thelma and her mother-in-law which provides some tense comic moments for Anna Maria Horsford.
