The cast has completely gelled by this point. Even though Sherman Hemsley still gets all the big laughs (the writers have not begun to tap into Anna Maria Horsford's comedic talents yet), it is definitely an all-group effort. The plot this time takes the characters to a spiritual retreat out in the woods, and Hemsley's deacon must face several fears, in truly funny ways. First, there's a bear that licks his foot while he is immobile in a bed after an injury; then there is a confrontation with an old client he sent to jail for a long period of time due to his incompetence as a lawyer. During these personal trials, the deacon is helped by his daughter Thelma, but he also learns to rely on himself and summon his own inner strength. His character grows as a result of this episode, and it is one of the best first season episodes of 'Amen.'moreless
