"Perfect"

If there were a retrospective episode of 'Amen,' the wedding scene between Rolly and Leola would have to be included. It ranks up there with Thelma and Reuben's wedding as one of the defining moments of the series. For the special occasion, the producers have taken the cast and crew to an actual church location to film the scenes where the elderly lovebirds exchange their vows. This is one of the sweetest moments of the series, and the scenes leading up to the marriage give Jester Hairston some of his best opportunites to display the many dimensions of his character, Rolly Forbes. I particularly love the scene in the reverend's office where he tries to explain why he suddenly doesn't want to marry Leola, and it takes him forever to clean his glasses and get to the point. He has done that sort of gag in other episodes, namely in 'Frye for the Defense' when he is on the witness stand and prolongs the trial. But what makes this scene so good is that Hairston's calm and tranquility is a bit unruffled by his sudden anger and hurt feelings about the woman he seeks to marry, and that is spilled over on to the deacon who has a tantrum on the floor. I wish there were more moments where we see the deacon and Rolly's friendship exploited like this to great comic effect. For fans of Jester Hairston (and Rosetta LeNoire), this is probably a top episode.moreless
