  • The deacon and Amelia get lost in blizzard and take refuge in a cabin. The deacon believes that Amelia has saved his life and when they get home, he buys her mink coat out of gratitude.

The physical movements of Sherman Hemsley during the scenes when the deacon and Amelia are snowbound at the cabin are truly fantastic to watch. It sort of reminds one of the 'I Love Lucy' episode where Lucy gets stuck in a freezer and comes out with icicles hanging down from around her face. The deacon also has icicles, but the writers take it a step further. His body is stiff as a board, and Amelia must hoist him up in order to take his boots off. Then, she has to lower him gently on to a sleeping bag and crawl in beside him to keep him warm! There are many implications, when they are discovered by the rest of the church board the next morning. When they get back home, the deacon goes overboard lavishing praise and gifts on Amelia. It takes their relationship to a new level. During most of the series' run, I always got the sense that there was something behind the love-hate relationship between these two characters. Hemsley and costar Roz Ryan make them more than sparring partners during moments like this. Had the show gone on, it would've been fun to see them eventually married.
