This episode puts Sherman Hemsley's character into the thick of things when the deacon is required to deliver a baby at the house. The baby in question belongs to a high school girl whose pregnancy is seen as somewhat scandalous. In fact, the reverend has asked her to step down from the church choir so she will not be a role model for the other youth in this condition. Thelma and the Hetebrinks voice their disagreement and offer as much support to the young woman as possible. This is one of those episodes that not only showcases Hemsley in an over-the-top situation played for laughs (the birthing scene, conducted over the phone with a 911 operator)...but it also shows the real-life ramifications of what happens when a church youth strays from the path. She is offered guidance, love and support. But also, the church leaders do not make any compromises in what they believe is the right and the wrong thing to do. I think that makes this episode particularly strong, even if it is not fully understood by those who don't share such conservative views.moreless
