Thelma is determined to enjoy her honeymoon with Reuben. But first she has to deal with her father who has trouble saying goodbye. Then, she has to take care of a lunatic outside the window who wants to leap to his death.
It's time for Thelma and Reuben's honeymoon. Of course, in true 'Amen' fashion, this type of event could not occur without a series of problems. First, there's a fog-bound plane that cannot leave for the planned destination of Hawaii. Next, there's the deacon, who has a hard time saying goodbye and doesn't want to leave the honeymoon suite. Then, there's the small detail of a jumper outside on the ledge. But during all these increasingly outlandish situations, we get to observe some very tender moments. We see Ernie in a much more sympathetic light, letting go of his only child; and then, back at the house, a nice touch by the Hetebrinks who promise to invite him over for dinners (even though we know Inga will still be around). The episode culminates with some real stunt work done by series stars Anna Maria Horsford and Clifton Davis who appear out on the ledge and help the troubled stranger back in through the window. What's great about the outside ledge scene is how the writers have given Thelma even more backbone (or perhaps more accurately, an adrenaline rush) as she whisks the man out of danger and inside the room so as not to delay the beginning of her honeymoon night with Reuben. In this moment, we sort of see an interesting philosophical difference between Reuben and Thelma. Reuben is much more tolerant and liberal in his attitudes; he approaches a dangerous situation much more empathetically. But Thelma is a lot less liberal in her understanding and will take swift action to quash a threat or outside interference to her marriage.
