Thelma is trying to help Reuben impress an important church leader. She prepares a meal without the help of the Hetebrink sisters. When she thinks the liver pate has been poisoned, the deacon helps her inform their dinner guests.
This episode has quite a few laughs. If anything, it features Tony T. Johnson quite a bit as Chris. Usually, he comes in for a line or two, upsets the status quo, and someone carries him out the door (mostly, the deacon or Thelma). But he has about three scenes in this one and he's much more integral to the plot. Here, one of his pets (named 'Nutsy') has died after eating some of Thelma's pate. Of course, this happens during an important dinner party, and Thelma assumes the animal died because of her cooking. She tells her father, and this leads to a hilarious moment where Sherman Hemsley serves everyone some salt water to counteract the supposedly toxic food they have consumed. They all spit the water out on each other, and then they are rushed by ambulance to the hospital after being told what has happened. But the food was not bad, and Chris' pet died of natural causes. There is a wonderful scene at the end, filled with the humanity and spirituality that is this series' hallmark, where the reverend performs a eulogy for the boy's animal.
