  • The deacon takes on a new client who is able to see things into the future. She predicts that Reuben will be getting married, but that the bride will not be Thelma.

This is the first of a two-part episode with special guest Lonette McKee who plays Tanya, a new client of Ernie's who happens to be psychic. The premise sets up some interesting scenes for both Sherman Hemsley and Anna Maria Horsford. In particular, Hemsley's character seeks to gain financially from his client's ability to see the future, so he gets to be his usual scheming self. Meanwhile, Horsford's character receives the crushing news that her beloved reverend (played by Clifton Davis) will be marrying someone else-- Tanya herself. As expected, Horsford's reactions are priceless. But earlier in the episode, there are two excellent moments that really define some of these characters. First, there is a scene at the church office where neighbor boy Chris (Tony T. Johnson) sees the reverend in an embrace with Tanya and says he will be going to tell Thelma about this, which implies that he is not a very nice kid and probably blackmails the local folks. Then, there is a scene where Thelma's birthday party occurs. She receives a small box from a jewelry store and assumes it is an engagement ring, when actually it is a gift of earrings from Reuben. The not-so-surprised looks exchanged by the deacon, Rolly and the Hetebrinks speaks volumes about their view of Thelma and Reuben's courtship.
