  • The church puts on another great talent show. This time the proceeds go to Mother Hale's charity in Harlem.

This is the second musical revue type episode of 'Amen' done to raise awareness and funds for a charitable organization. In this episode, the honoree is Mother Hale and her home for children in Harlem. She makes a special appearance. But unlike the talent show in season 3 when the Easter Seals poster child spoke, Mother Hale does not make a speech. Instead, Clifton Davis sings to her; and then, she joins the cast up on stage for a hymn led by Jester Hairston. In fact, the finale is probably one of Hairston's best musical performances on the series. You can tell he enjoys doing these types of scenes and so does the rest of the cast. But Davis and Hairston aren't the only ones who get to display their talents. The episode begins with a rap by Sherman Hemsley and Tony T. Johnson which is very good and has a strong message about the importance of education. Then, Roz Ryan does a Broadway-type number set in a classroom, and this is followed by a reading of Langston Hughes poetry by Barbara Montgomery. I think of all the episodes she appeared on, this is probably one of the better Cassietta moments. Ms. Montgomery does a wonderful interpretation of 'Madam' and it shows a side of her talents that was rarely utilized on the series.
