This is one of Anna Maria Horsford's better performances in the first season of 'Amen.' Her character Thelma must deal with all sorts of conflicted emotions when she agrees to marry an old boyfriend but realizes it's the new reverend that she loves. There is one scene that allows Horsford to do some great physical comedy: the moment when Thelma tries to climb down out the window and get away on her wedding day. Later, when the deacon comes up to her room to speak with her and she calls off the wedding, we get a much more tender side of the character.
