As far as the Reuben-Thelma romance goes, this is one of the most important earlier episodes. I remember watching this one first-run back in the 80s. Viewers know at the end, when the reverend shows his first real passion towards Thelma, that these two characters will eventually get married. However, I don't think anyone could've predicted it would take the writers three years for them to finally tie the knot! It is definitely one of the most drawn out courtships in sitcom history. Before this episode, Thelma's feelings for the reverend have been gradually developing, but it it is usually depicted as a one-sided affair. At this point, it is now revealed that he has romantic feelings for her, too. The use of poetry in the episode and the final scene where he kisses her on the porch makes it truly memorable. This episode is also highlighted by the guest appearance of Sherman Hemsley's former costar from 'The Jeffersons,' Berlinda Tolbert. Ms. Tolbert plays one of Thelma's childhood friends. She's a great actress, and it's too bad she wasn't invited back to play this character again.
