  • Thelma is having trouble following orders on base, and a mean officer decides to take away her weekend pass. When Ernie and Reuben go to the base to plead Thelma's case, they learn the sergeant has his own ideas about the woman they love.

We continue the army story arc, and there are some fun moments for fans of the Thelma character. She is pretty much inept and unable to really follow orders in the military. This leads to her being denied certain privileges and she calls home to tell her father about this. Again, we get to see Anna Maria Horsford do her usual whining for comic effect, and we get to see a tender side of Sherman's Hemsley's deacon. But the story becomes a bit of a melodrama at this point, when it is revealed that the sergeant, played by Richard Roundtree, has developed a romantic interest in Thelma. The story is left unresolved after Reuben witnesses a kiss between Sgt. Burke and Thelma, and viewers must check back for the next episode to find out what happens...if Thelma will eventually find her way back into Reuben's loving arms.
