  • When her relationship with Reuben hits a snag because of their non-wedding, Thelma does what any girl would do: she signs up with the army and dedicates herself to her country.

We begin a multiple episode story arc with this broadcast. Thelma (Anna Maria Horsford) has not married Reuben, the man of her dreams. Her life goes into a complete tailspin and she soon finds herself in active duty. When her father and Reuben begin to worry about her, they decide to sneak on base and crash the barracks. However, it is an all-female facility, and they appear in drag. This is definitely one of the more hilarious moments of the fourth season, especially when a military superior notes the moustache on the deacon's face. The high-pitched voices that Sherman Hemsley and Clifton Davis use are not exactly very convincing, but they do the trick comedy-wise. There is a great scene at the end when Thelma must acknowledge that these men are her father and her fiance. But she insists she's in the army to stay, and this is one of the first times the character is allowed to have some real backbone.
