  • In this episode of American Chopper, the OCC crew go to work on a bike for Flow Jet.

    8.0
Everyone who views American Chopper on a regular basis knows what a "Flow Jet" is. For the uninitated, a Flow Jet is a machine that cuts out flat plates of billet in any design you can think of. In past episodes we have watched the OCC crew use it to make any number of special one-off custom parts for their bikes and in one recent episode they even digitized a real (dead) lobster and used the Flow Jet to cut out lobster shaped decorations for the side of a giant lobster pot.

But that was the old Flow Jet and now the OCC crew has a new one. One which will cut in five different axis and make things that will blow your mind. To celebrate, the crew sets out to build a bike that will really highlight the capabilities of this new five axis technology. Of course the machine has to be put in and that alone takes some doing. I wonder if any OSHA inspectors watch the show...

As work on the bike begins, football legend and the coach of "Da Bears," Mike Ditka and his son show up with a message about the hazards of steriod use. Even though this is not a central part of the show, the guys go into charity-bike-episode mode and spout the usual platitudes about how good causes are good and how bad things, like steroids, are bad. Afterwards, Mikey gives him the five cent tour of the shop and the episode moves on with some nice words from Mikey about his impressions of the Ditkas but without too much painful hero worship to slow things down.

The show gets into the meat of the build and we get to see the new Flow Jet in action as it cuts out parts. Jason designs some cool new wheels and things are generally progressing well so all three of the Teutuls head out to the California desert to shoot a new opening for the show. We ride along mile after mile and take after take as the whole thing comes together. It's an interesting process.

Meanwhile back at the shop, Vinny calls in sick and Rick works hard to push the project forward by himself. By the time the Teutuls get back, Rick has the bike looking good and the stress levels are pretty low. While the work goes on, Mikey gets started on a "special project" guaranteed to bring big laughs in the next episode.

I liked this episode. After the meandering GoDaddy episodes and the just-for-fun Mikey/Vinny Special, I really enjoyed the return of the proper mix of bike building and fun. I also liked seeing the film shoot out in the California desert and getting a little insight into just how much work it takes to make people look so cool. I call it another "fine example" of this, the best of all reality shows.moreless
