  • Roger searches a new human companion

    9.5
When Roger is rejected by Steve, who seems to be over him, Roger heads out in search of a new human companion. But when this new friend starts to abuse Roger and the relationship turns into a lot of excuses and sorry's, Steve and Hayley scheme to get Roger out of the bad relationship and back home where he belongs. Meanwhile, Stan tours the Mr. Pibb factory and meets the man himself. I thought this episode was very excellent. Not season 2's greatest but it is one my favorites. My favorite/funny parts were the montage during Roger's song (it shows us how Roger became Steve's friend), the guy being a girl, Jeff's cameo,Stan and Francine jamming to a song, Roger pretending to be sick and going back to his hometown, and the last part. The only scenes that lower the chance for a perfect episode were the scenes where Henry kept beating up Roger for no reason. But overall this episode was very enjoyable. 9.5/10moreless

Overall, roger kept getting beat up which lowered my score.

    9.0
Roger is rejected by Steve and starts spending time with a new kid, one who beats him up when things don't go his way. When Steve finds out the other boy attacks Roger, he tries to do something, but the boy swears he will go to the FBI and tell them about Roger being an alien if he does anything.

Good episode. I really liked the main plot in this. I thought the sub plot with Mr. Pibb was alright. It started off funny but got a little boring near the end. But Roger's plot, whilst not really hilarious, was better in terms of plot, so overall it was a good episode, one that gets a B+ as a grade from me.moreless
  • ROger finds a replacement Steve.

    7.5
Roger befriending a new kid in an ET spoof, mixed with an abusive relationship, isn't the most normal plot one would think of, but it was pretty funny, though it did seem to go on for too long and became predictable.

Keeping with the weird factor, Stan and Francine travel the country to keep their favourite soft drink alive, and through that crazy journey find out what they were really fighting for, their love.

Both these plots make fun of clichés, but of course this becomes a cliché itself, and the episode is fairly funny throughout the episode, but not a very memorable one.moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • Roger is seen drinking from a bottle of booze with the name, Joe Daniello's, which is a take from Jack Daniels brand, and is a nod to the director of the episode, Joe Daniello. This name is seen in multiple episodes over time on the bottle, as well.

    • During the flashback which shows how Mr. Pibb has helped Stan and Francine through tough times, the top of Hayley's baby bottle disappears for a split second before the shot widens to show Stan.

    • The house that Roger ends up and eventually get adopted in while he is drunk is an exact replica of the one seen in E.T.

    • The song playing During Stan and Francine's visit to the Mr. Pibb factory is "Go For A Soda" by Canadian rocker Kim Mitchell.

    • Featured Music: "Cold Beverage" by G. Love & Special Sauce.
"When She Loved Me" by Randy Newman

    • Langley Falls Post front page headline: "Homemade Valentine Proves Thought Doesn't Count."

  • QUOTES (9)

    • Stan: Ah, Mr. Pibb. The cornerstone of our love. Delicious, refreshing, and totally lacking in portention!

    • Henry: You don't appreciate what I've done for you! I made you lieutenant! You were a cook when we started playing!

    • Roger: Oh, man, he's never gonna fall for this.
      Henry: Cool! A real spaceship.
Roger: Then again, he is nine.

    • Steve: (About Roger) Why does he stay, Hayley?! Why does he stay?
Hayley: Clearly, he's getting something from this kid he wasn't getting from you. When you have that kind of co-dependency, it can be hard to break free from an abusive relationship.
Jeff: Can I come out of the pantry now, babe?
Hayley: I said I'll get you when I'm ready! (Throws her coffee mug at him)

    • Hayley: What's wrong with you? You look horrible.
Klaus: I've had this flu for, like, two weeks. I started to feel better on Tuesday, but then I pushed it and now I have this darker mucus and...
Hayley: I was talking to Steve.
Klaus: Are you sure you don't want to be a nurse, Hayley? You're so caring!

    • Steve: You sound just like Daphne Zuniga from that Lifetime movie, and you remember what happened to her.
Roger: Oh, my God! She ended up on ABC Family! Well, I'm not going to let that happen to me.

    • Bob: Welcome to the Mr. Pibb Experience. Stan. Francine.
Stan: Evening, Bob. You get the e-mail I sent you with different ideas for Pibb T-shirts?
Bob: Yes, I deleted it immediately.
      Stan: (Laughs) Classic Bob.

    • Stan: I can't believe you're still upset. It's been a week.
Francine: You called me a pig.
Stan: I didn't say you were a pig. I said that dress made you look like a pig. And those shoes didn't help. All your fat, sweaty toes shoved in there like 20 Hondurans stuffed in a giant... shoe.

    • Steve: Chlorine, Bromine... crap! (Looks at book) Astatine! How could I forget? It has the words "teen" and "ass" in it.

  • NOTES (5)

  • ALLUSIONS (6)

    • Toy Story 3: In some reviews about American Dad episode ,"Toy Whorey", they say the writers were running out of material and took the premise of other shows and movies to produce it, like Toy Story 3's premise that Andy would tire of his toys when he grew up, for one. I say the same could be said of the producers of Toy Story 3 in that theAmerican Dadepisode ,A.T. The Abusive Terrestrial, Steve tires of having an alien to play with growing up, and gets more interested in girls than having Roger around. This episode was on the air in 2007, and Toy Story 3 was put in theaters in 2010. Especially the lamenting song Roger sings, "When I Was His Alien", is very similar to how Woody laments about Andy growing up and apart from him, which is the main premise of the movie. Turn about is fair play in Hollywood and life in general.

    • Roger: Check it out, I blinded us with science!

This is a reference to the 1983 song "She Blinded Me with Science" by Thomas Dolby.

    • Laverne & Shirley
The glove on the bottle in the Mr. Pibb factory is a reference to the television show Laverne & Shirley, where they wave to a glove that they put on a bottle in the plant that they work at in the opening sequence of the show.

    • Henry: Name
The name of the kid that befriends Roger is a reference to actor Henry Thomas. Henry Thomas played Elliot in E.T. The Extra Terrestrial.

    • Mr. Pibb: Soda
Mr. Pibb soda is a former beverage from the Coca-Cola Company, originally introduced in 1971. Like in the episode, they changed the formula in 2001, and it now sells as Pibb Xtra.

    • Episode Title: A.T. The Abusive Terrestrial
This is an allusion to the movie E.T. The Extra Terrestrial.
