I would go for American Dad, but just cause I like it a little more. Both are great.

Hey, hey, hey! I would like to be the voice of reason and say.... Family Guy and American Dad both suck equally.

they're bith great of course but american dad is way funnirer because of the more traditional plot structure and even some of the old scholl simpsons morals which i think is really nice since tv's getting way too cruel.....i mean i like family guy but even i sometimes think it's out of line and family guy is not always funny...but american dad's every episode is funny.....although i must admitt family guy is more original and innovative cause of its cultural references but that's what makes it kinda boring sometimes.....american dad is way funnier

Though I HATE to compare shows, I have to say I'm loving American Dad A LOT right now. I also enjoy Family Guy, but lately it got a few 'chuckles' out of me, while American Dad has me laughing out loud, a couple of times in an episode. The season opener sunday was so funny.

Like someone else said, it also has a lot more solid plot structure, which I wish FG would get back to. I still love both shows, but at the moment, American Dad has to be the best.

Another reason why American Dad is better is because doesn't go overboard with these gags that pop out of nowhere. For example, at least AD doesn't have Marty McFly from Back the the Future come out of nowhere. Or go way too far with parodizing the same movies from the 80's. i.e. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Back to the Future.

there's no contest on a week by week basis, american dad has for several years been much funnier.

but those old episodes of family guy were amazing and caught me at exactly the right time in my life, mid-teens, to have me howling out loud, so there's still a strong tie to them.

I don't watch either a lot, but I can hardly stand Family Guy, for the most part, so probably American Dad.

Well its hard to choose. I'd say American Dad is slightly better than Family Guy because its not filled with so many cutaway gags, although Family Guy is still one of my favourite TV shows.

I feel that the first three seasons of family guy (before being cancelled), they were hilarious. They had random jokes to 'em, but they still had SOME semblance of a plot with character development; however, when they returned back on the air, the writers seemed to rely on flashbacks and random references to the 80's more so than actually writing a good plot.

American Dad, on the other hand, still manages to be funny, and still have a great story-line. For instance, take the episode "With Friends Like Steve's", there was tons of witty one-liners, like Roger in conversation with Stan saying, "Wow, that's really.... really boring.", or the not so-subtle cracks at Tara Reid. Yet, the part that made the episode best was the actual plot behind it. Stan not feeling connected to his son, Steve bored of his father's C.I.A. gig, and eventually realizing that he missed it when it wasn't there anymore, that, to me, is something I can identify with. In addition to being something I can relate with, they present the topic in a humorous manner.

In summation, Family Guy is just a bunch of random jokes and allusions to the 1980's, but American Dad is an actual comedy SHOW in that it tells a story.

    American Dad! for the win!

I guess it depends on the mood.I think I like watching new episodes of Family Guy more than American Dad but I watch my American Dad DVDs more than my Family Guy DVDs, so I guess it's even.

    American Dad. Because it's coherent.

Relatively. It's wacky, but there are no manatees.

And Clevelland sucks. Extremely unfunny. His ex-wife must have gotten all the jokes in the divorce, because he doesn't seem to know what the hell he's doing or how to fill out 30 minutes.
