  • Kind of a disappointing Season 7 finale but this was an overall great episode

I thought that this was an overall great episode of "American Dad". It was kind of disappointing Season 7 finale though and it was not the best "American Dad" episode I've ever seen. There weren't that many funny scenes but there were maybe one chuckle and hmmm funny moment. Roger's plot wasn't that great and it was weaker than Stan and Steve's plot. Roger marrying this country woman and then being forced to be the father when he didn't want to made no point to me. Also, kids could get traumatized but the country kids' dog gets ranned over and I kind of felt bad for the country kids because they were crying... I don't recommend kids seeing this episode. It wasn't violent except for the dog being runned over but you know... just don't let them see it. Stan and Steve's plot was a little better but still was weak. I laughed when Stan was speeding during the traffic and a guy's butt was caught on fire. That guy popping up and saying "It was kind of funny" was also pretty funny. The funniest of this episode was probably when the zookeeper was watching a 3-D film and then he is talking on the phone and then audience kept shushing and then one guy says "Could you keep it down, we're trying to watch this porno". It was also funny when the zookeeper was translating of what the gorillas are saying. Roger's country song at the end was funny but was still pointless after what happened in his plot. The ending was also kind of funny when Stan went to buy Francine an expensive jewelry which he didn't. Overall, a great episode of "American Dad" but it was kind of a disappointing Season 7 finale. 8/10moreless

when the gorilla came into play i thought 'Are they really copying a post-classic average Simpsons episode?' but luckily it was different. anyway i liked the episode quite a bit. Stan talking on the phone with Steve in the room, as if he was actually talking to Francine (and the 'Thanks a lot, now I'm in trouble' line), Roger's first country song, Roger's country song about the ugly girl, Steve repeating 'purple hat' to get Stan to laugh, etc. were things i found funny. not one of their more memorable episodes but i thought it was pretty good. "Gorillas in the Mist" is another solid episode of American Dad, but it also exposed the show's glaring flaw in its formula: they have one good storyline and the other one is usually terrible. Tonight, Roger was involved in the terrible storyline where he decided to marry a hick to gain the knowledge necessary to write a country song. It produced a few laughs, including a The Young and the Restless reference which I was shocked to see this program make, but did love it, but ultimately was beneath this show.

You also had a fun storyline with Stan and Steve bonding as friends, not father and son which produced a strong comedic moment where two gorillas emulated a typical father and son conversation.

As a whole it was a good episode, but focus on making the "B" storyline as good as the "A" from now on.moreless
  • A funny, weird installment that stays true to the series' heart.

    6.5
Where American Dad's bigger brother goes for the absurd and over-the-top, this show chooses to stay close to the family concept. Regardless of what crazy pranks Roger pulls or random ideas Stan executes, in the end American Dad is still very much a family show.

Not any different is the show's sixth season finale that sees Stan and Steve becoming friends. It's a contemporary subject that any father and son face at some point. Obviously the show isn't going to make it too emotional and the development takes place on sailboats and among gorillas but it works nonetheless. Stan, like always, is impulsive enough to suddenly throw is entire relationship with his son around because it seems to work for one night. That kind of story setting might not be very realistic but in one way or another it's relatable. Meanwhile, Roger cranks up the crazy because he wants to write a good country song. Suddenly he finds himself married to some trailer park trash with a bunch of children. Of course there's no sympathy here but the scenes are funny and the ending with the dog is perfectly on the edge. It might not be this season's best episode but as a closer, Gorillas In The Mist is a good one to remember the show by over the summer.moreless
