Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • The original Grand Central Depot, constructed by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1871, sat astride a massive network of tracks almost impossible for the public to navigate. The switching was so tangled and confused that a tragic steam train collision occurred in 1902. The conversion to electric trains and underground passenger boarding was financed by the then-novel concept of generating income by leasing or selling the surface land to other developers.

  • QUOTES (1)

    • Frank Prial (architect): (on the architectural collaboration of the haughty Whitney Warren and the firm of Reed and Stem) What resulted however, we like to say, is far superior to what either firm could have done on their own.
