    • TRIVIA (1)

      • Black military personnel training at southern camps were often asked to conceal themselves from the windows of trains as they were being transported.

    • QUOTES (0)

    • NOTES (1)

      • This film was nominated for an Academy Award (Best Documentary Feature). However, it also generated controversy when historians questioned the documentary's scholarship, including its assertion that certain Black soldiers (the 761st Tank Batallion) had any role in liberating the better-known Nazi concentration camps. The charges of fabricating these events for the sake of a more dramatic story have had enough impact that this installment is one that American Experience does not refer to on its website list of past broadcasts.
