Gay bars like the Stonewall Inn were run by mafia operatives who skirted laws and sold stolen liquor at hugely marked-up prices.
Ed Koch (former NYC politician): Gay rights, like the rights of blacks, were constantly under attack. While blacks were protected in constitutional amendments coming out of the Civil War, gays were not protected by law and certainly not by the Constitution.
