The March of Dimes (and the new idea of asking little from many) was specifically aimed at an economy in shambles, one where the government had little experience intervening and the rich had stopped their philanthropy. At the same time, even at the height of the polio epidemic, it was more rare to contract the disease than it was of being injured seriously in a car accident.
Larry Becker (polio sufferer): I was afraid, not so much of pain but of loss of control. My parents were out of the room, they were given very bad news. There wasn't much hope I was going to recover.
