Contrary to popular opinion today, the fighting between the United States and Japan was so brutal and ferocious that no American leaders of the time voiced any objections to the use of atomic weapons to bring the war to a final close. From surviving records of the Japanese perspective, the declaraton of war by the Soviet Union was perhaps equally important in their surrender.
Narrator: (By 1945) the Imperial Army (of Japan) developed a plan to save Japan from humiliating defeat. It was based on death before surrender.
