Most evidence indicates that the Wampanoag Algonquin enjoyed benefit from allying with Europeans, fearing encroachment from the much stronger Narragansett people to the west. It wasn't until trade "currency" broke down and increasing waves of English arrived in New England that these early agreements had no further meaning for either group.
