Many Cherokee intermarried with Scots-Irish settlers, came to own and farm land (some even owning slaves), and adopted the English language and religion. Their status as a sovereign nation was upheld by the US Supreme Court but was continually undermined by Andrew Jackson and those who believed that states had the right to ignore Federally-negotiated treaties.
