    Written by: Tim Minear

    Directed by: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon

It was way back in December 2011, but I still remember it vividly. It was hands down, the best episode of the 1st season. Jessica Lange continued to amaze me with her performances. And I had to shed a few tears away with Tate/Violet scenes and when I realized Vivian died during the child birth. Sad :( 10/10
  • One of the best episodes so far!

(SPOILERS) Vivien dies in child birth, and goes to an "afterlife" with Violet, whose also passed.
  • Best TV Program This Season

You know how I've come to realize that this TV Show is Excellent? Because I am glued to the TV Screen when it is on. And when is is over, I can't believe it went so fast....And I want More!

It is soooo Scary, but you just can't get enough of it. Nominated for a Golden Globe too - Great!
  • Birth

Birth was a superb episode of American Horror Story and I enjoyed watching this episode as Ben unknowingly tests Violets boundaries, the ghosts claim rights to Vivian's babies and Vivian goes into labor. It was interesting to learn more about the babies as well as more history about past residents of the Murder House. Some of the scenes were literally a little too dark to see what was going on or see characters faces clearly, but this added to the tragic happenings of this episode. There was drama, suspense, and intrigue as well as character and plot development. There is a new permanent resident in the house, and the fate of the babies is yet to be revealed. I look forward to watching the next episode!!!!!!!moreless

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Constance: What you are planning to do is unnatural.
Chad: Deodorant's unnatural, but it's a public good. We'll make excellent parents.
Constance: Man shall not lie with man. It is an abomination.
Chad: So's that hairdo, but I figure that's your business.

    • Tate: Seriously, though, are you ready for all this? I mean, you never struck me as the diapers and midnight feedings type.
Patrick: Maybe you should have taken a few minutes to get to know me before you stuck a fireplace poker up my ass.
      Tate: Fair enough.

    • Moira: He's the most beautiful baby I've ever seen.
Constance: From blood and pain come perfection.

    • Violet: I used to think you were like me. You were attracted to the darkness, but Tate, you are the darkness.

  • NOTES (2)

    • Chad: A very, very human surrogate, Elvira.
Referencing Elvira, real name Cassandra Peterson, who is the fictional TV and movie hostess starting with Elvira's Movie Macabre in the Los Angeles area in 1981. Elvira is known for her goth look, black beehive wig, skintight black dress, low-cut cleavage, affection for Z-grade horror movies, and Valley Girl humor.

    • Chad: Are you telling me that Norman Bates Jr. is the baby's daddy?
Referencing Norman Bates, the killer played by Anthony Perkins in the 1960 movie Psycho, and its sequels, based on the novel by Robert Bloch.
