Many former contestants sang a tribute song to Simon. The song was "Together We Are One" by Delta Goodman. The previous winners came out in order (minus Jordin and Taylor who switched) and then other Idols joined them. David Cook was the only past winner that was not there as he had prior engagements. However, due to performing earlier in the season, every previous winner performed this season (this has not been done since season 3 when there were only 2 previous winners). The following is a list of all the contestants who were apart of the tribute:  Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, Kris Allen, Ace Young, Allison Iraheta, Anoop Desai, Blake Lewis, Bo Bice, Brooke White, Chris Richardson, Constantine Maroulis, David Archuleta, Diana DeGarmo, Elliott Yamin, Jason Castro, Justin Guarini, Kimberly Caldwell, Kristy Lee Cook, Matt Giraud, Melinda Doolittle, Michael Johns, Mikalah Gordon and Vonzell Solomon as well as this season's Top 12
Top 12 sang Janet Jackson's "Again," and at the end she joined them then sang "Nothing," and "Nasty" by herself
Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox Ft. Joe Cocker- "With a Little Help from My Friends" by The Beatles. This is the first time the the Top 2 sing with someone else and not a duet (last season Queen never sang just played)

    • The Ford Music video was "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts. Lee and Crystal sang in front of a screen which showed other Ford Video clips.

    • Due to this being Simon's last season there were a number of videos shown (one which had Rickey Gervais in it) which chronicled his journey. Dane Cook came on stage to perform a song called "Simon Said" which took actually mean things Simon has said over the years and put in his song. Towards the end former contestants, Norman Gentle, Tatiana Del Toro, Ian Bernardo, Janet McNamara, Renaldo Lapuz, and the Bertnam twins, came up and joined him. Ian went and grabbed the mic and started yelling at Simon saying he would replace him. While it was planned for them to go on stage, the grabbing of the mic was not, and so they cut to commercial early. The next day Dane Cook tweeted that the full song would be on iTunes. Paula also returned for the first time since leaving and did a bit of a comedy routine on stage. Later former Idol contestants sang a song (note in list of special performances), and then Simon came up and thanked everyone.

    • Semi-Finalist from this season Janell Wheeler was in Crystal's home town of Toledo and Season 3 contestant Matt Rogers was in Lee's hometown of Mount Prospect, reporting.

    • Every year the Idol's Top 2 get Ford cars, but this year they got ones that had the custom designs they made earlier in the season. Kris Allen was there to hand them their keys.

    • Actors David Hasselhoff and Lori Laughlin were in the audience tonight.

    • At the start of Kris Allen's song, Ryan's mic was still on and you could hear him talking.

    • Ryan said that coming into the performance night Lee and Crystal had only been separated by 2% of the votes.

    • This is a 2 hour & 7 min season finale

  • Quotes

  • Notes

    • Crystal becomes the first ever female runner up to have never been in the Bottom 2/3. Previously the only females not in the Bottom 2/3, went on to win.

    • Lee becomes the second male to win when up against a female. Taylor Hicks is the other.

    • It was made well known that this was Simon Cowell's last episode as a Judge on the show, however it is also Ellen DeGeneres' and Kara DioGuardi's as well. They however, like Paula, left after the season ended so there was no mention of it. Ellen decided she no longer wanted to be on the show as it wasn't the right fit for her. Kara's contract was not renewed, but it seems as if she also made the decision to leave, however there was also speculation of her being fired.

    • Ryan did not mention how many votes there were for the previous night, however in one video it mentioned that there had been about 500 million votes throughout the season.
