*This was the first time ever NO contestants appear in a video with new footage. Usually the Top 2 video has the Top two singing in front of a screen with the footage in the back.
Although there have been many teary performances after winning Phillip actually stopped singing part way through and even left the stage before the song ended to go see his family.
Scotty McCreery presented Phillip with the trophy after it was announced he had won.

Season 3 Runner Up Diana DeGarmo and Season 5 contestant Ace Young, were called up on stage and revealed they were dating, and then Ace proposed. They become the first Idol couple ever, and this was the first ever proposal on the show. They eventually got married on June 1st 2013.
Actresses Lisa Rinna and Jane Lynch, Singer Jason Derulo, Season 4 Winner, Carrie Underwood, Season 8 Runner Up Adam Lambert, Season 10 Runner Up Lauren Alaina, and Season 5 Winner Taylor Hicks were in the audience tonight.
Phiilip becomes the 8th Winner and 11th person overall to have never been in the bottom 3/2. Jermaine Jones, who was not technically in the bottom 3/2 does not count as he was disqualified in the second week, plus WAS in the bottom 3 Guys in the one week he was there.
Phillip becomes the first Winner to have auditioned in the first city that the Judges visited.
This is the last episode for Judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez who both announced two months after the season that they would not be coming back. Steven Tyler said he wanted to go back to his first love, which was his band. Jennifer left to focus on her career as well, but did later return for Season 13. Randy Jackson still remained as the lone Judge since Season 1.

Jermaine becomes the third contestant to not appear in the finale of their own season, with the first two being Corey Clark (also disqualified) and Josh Gracin (who was called to military duty) both from Season 2.
In an ode to Randy Jackson constantly telling contestants throughout the 11 season of American Idol that they can "sing the phonebook", a video was shown of the Top 12 (minus Jessica and Phillip) singing the phonebook. Afterward Scotty McCreery presented Randy with a phonebook.
