The fact that American Idol has been on for ten years boggles my mind. Sure, we've gotten some undoubtedly talented singers, but boy, they seem to do everything in their power to dumb down the singers once they win. Let the singers be themselves.
But I digress.. this premiere finds us with two new judges and a seemingly new found energy. Steven Tyler is excellent here and Jennifer Lopez finds a nice balance between the niceness of Paula Abdul and the humor of the other judges. All in all, the three judges here seem to already mesh better than the previous group. I love it.
But the show still has some kinks in it that they clearly aren't going to work out. First, why in the world are they letting in 15 year olds but not.. say, 29 or 30 year olds? It's been proven that young singers typically still having growing to do in their vocal range.. they could've just as easily extended the age limit a couple years ahead, but that's just nitpicking. They also like to focus on terrible singers, and I must say, the judges let through some pretty bad singers. At least Simon was the kind of guy who knew when to say no, and Lopez is nowhere near that point yet. But there's room to grow.
Overall, it was a surprisingly good way to jump into the new season. But we'll have to wait a while to see if any of these singers are worth listening to after the show is done.
