41 people made it on to the Hollywood Round
Although it is not really mentioned on the show, a new format is that contestants were allowed to audition online between August 1st and 14th. The main rule was that it had to be a cappella, just as it would be if it were at the main auditions.
This year, people are allowed to send in a video nominating a person, and one of the Judges will show up and surprise them and invite them to audition for the Judges. They only get an audition, not a guarantee that they go to Hollywood.
Due to Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler leaving, there is a new panel of Judges this year. Randy Jackson stays on, and with him are Country singer Keith Urban, R&B singer Mariah Carey and Pop star/Rapper Nicki Minaj. Both Keith and Nicki have performed as special guests on American Idol before, while Mariah has not only performed but was also a mentor in Season 7.
The Turbanator: The name and the segment surrounding it, including the music used is an obvious reference to "The Terminator" film franchise which stars Arnold Schwarzenegger.
