While many of the songs were not originally released in the year the contestants were born, a version of the song was. However, Jessica Sanchez was born in 1995, and Gloria Estefan's version was done in 1994. This is not the first time that this error has happened during this theme in American idol.
Phillip had surgery for a kidney stone but was still able to perform.
This week's co-mentor is will.i.am. This is his third time being a mentor, which is (at this point) the most of anyone.
It was revealed in this episode that Jermaine Jones was disqualified by executive producers Ken Warwick & Nigel Lythgoe due to having four outstanding warrants for his arrest in New Jersey. During the talk it seemed as if Jermaine did not admit to what happened, but in a later interview with a magazine said he had given them notice of being arrested previously, and didn't know he was breaking the rules. It seems as if he admitted to being arrested but was not open about still having the warrants out there. There was a controversy over the way it was handled, as they filmed the interview and disqualification and showed it during the episode. Jermaine Jones becomes the second person to be disqualified during the Finals, with the first being Corey Clark in Season 2.
Each contestant sang a song from the year they were born. Songs sung tonight:

Heejun Han-"Right Here Waiting" by Richard Marx (1989)
Elise Testone-"Let's Stay Together" by Tina Turner (1983)
DeAndre Brackensick-"Endless Love" by Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey (1994)
Shannon Magrane-"One Sweet Day" by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men (1995)
Colton Dixon-"Broken Heart" by White Lion (1991)
Erika Van Pelt-"Heaven" by Bryan Adams (1985)
Skylar Laine-"Love Sneakin' Up on You" by Bonnie Raitt (1994)
Joshua Ledet-"When a Man Loves a Woman" by Michael Bolton (1992)
Hollie Cavanagh-"The Power of Love" by Celine Dion (1993)
Note: The artists listed in the list are the ones who did the song in the year of the contestants birth, and not the original artist. Only five of the 11 contestants chose songs that were actually first released in their birth year. Colton's song was done by the same band but was a re-released in his birth year.
Jermaine Jones was scheduled to sing "Somewhere Out There" by Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram. A clip of his rehearsal was shown.
Due to his disqualification, Jermaine Jones becomes the first contestant ever in the Top 13/12/10 to have never appeared in the bottom 3/2 and yet still be eliminated. However, he was in the bottom 3 guys from the week before, but there was no confirmation on whether he was in the bottom 3/2 overall.
Due to Jermaine's disqualification there is no Top 12 this year. This becomes just the second season to not have a Top 12 (outside of Season 1 where there were only 10 to begin with). The other was Season 8, when there was a double elimination and went from 13 to 11.
