Many of the girls had an off night tonight as they sang to stay in the top. Bad song choices were what seemed to be the catalis of their impaired singing. Though their dress was different tonight their confidence seemed to be lacking. Though there were a few bright and shining moments for the girls all and all they semed a bit off. I am sure it is hard for the girls who remain, though releaved, to see two of their friends go. I hope next week brings a better choice in song and a confidence boost in how they perform.moreless

just alright, only Ayla and MAndisa were very good, don't like Kellie, most of the others are just average,I hope the girls start getting better, or the top 6 will be all guys, expect maybe one, but maybe thats good I want a guy to win this year, hope Brenna goes away for sure

For the most part, it's kind of hard to judge the singing in these early stages. Some of the ousted singers, given time and instruction, could improve a lot. Their singing could improve, that is. A certain someone's attitude may never improve. This means you, Brenna. I have disliked her since the "group sing" in the Hollywood round. The way she bullied the other girls was bad enough, but... sticking her rear end toward the judges and smacking it like that showed me that she is not American Idol material. Doesn't she realize that the producers are looking for more than a great singer? This is also about character and being a role model.

The winner of this show usually has a large number of young fans, the kind that have posters on their bedroom walls. That is why, I think, Clay had more commercial success than Ruben. Clay was more pin-up material Christina and Brittany "developed" from pop-princesses to the mature, slightly vulgar personas they are now. Brenna looks to have skipped the princess part and went straight to vulgar.

For the same reason, I, personally, don't think Fantasia from last season is a good role model at all. People keep commending her for being a single mom, but look at the rest of the facts. She got pregnant at 16 and dropped out of high school. But apparantly hasn't gone back to school, didn't have a job and wasn't looking for a job before AI. She said on the show that her hobby was "sitting on the couch, eating and hollering at" her child. What kind of role model is that?moreless
  • Mostly okay performances. Not a night to remember.

Katherine - I can't tell if she's good or sucks. It's a pretty slow song and there's that one weird high moment. / Simon's right, the song didn't connect with me. She was loads better last week.

Kinnik- fun performance. Great energy. But it's not much of a song to show off her vocals. Not much range. / And the judges agree with me.

Lisa- as she started, I thought it was gonna be another song. she chooses such great songs that really shows her vocal range. / What was Randy thinking? She did good!

Melissa- ooo, a Reba McEntire song. I like the song, and she does a pretty nice job with it. I don't know if I like listening to a person with raspy voice though. / This is one of the very few times I disagree with Simon, I thought she didn't do so bad.

Heather - I really like the song. She didn't give a powerful enough performance that I would expect. Her one long note hold didn't make up for the rest of the performance. / She did pale compared to Mariah Carey. Jesus, such big jabs from the judges. I'm amazed she's still smiling.

*Haha. Paul got moved away from Simon.

Brenna- her voice is too flat. I don't understand why people choose pop song like that that doesn't promote their vocal. / The judges are right! Brenna, please stop talking. Your votes are going down by million by each word coming out of your mouth.

Paris Wow! Very good! The start was a little iffy, but she brought it. / I do agree with the judges that she should pick younger songs, but still, most younger songs suck, and if it's too dancey or pop, then it won't show their vocals. Let's see if she manages to find a young song that will show off her vocals next time.

Ayla - This song perfectly fits her. She did a good job with it. I could hear a few shaky moments, but overall, I enjoyed it. / I can see where Simon said it was "mechanical" but she's still very good this week.

Kelly Didn't someone do this song last week? She did it pretty nicely. The song doesn't allow much vocal range, but she still managed to belt out some tune. / She is cute. And her kalamari comment did make me laugh.

Mandisa We got a HOT one here dawg pound. Got to be the best of the night. / Wow, the judges, besides Paula, were a little rougher than I thought for her.

    ADD TRIVIA
    • Lisa comments that she is the youngest in the competition, but last week Ryan said Kevin was the youngest. Kevin is the youngest BOY but not the younger overall. He was born one month before Lisa, so her comment tonight was true.

    • Each contestant was asked to talk about their "defining Idol moment" for their video clip that is shown before their performances.

    • All the contestants perform in the exact order--but in reverse--they performed the previous week.

  • QUOTES (8)

    ADD QUOTES
    • Simon (to Brenna after she sang Donna Summer's "Last Dance"): I would change the word 'Dance' to 'Chance' because that's what it was.

    • Simon (to Mandisa): When you're on it, I don't think there is a better female singer in this competition.

    • Simon (to Heather): It was kind of like one of those ghastly pageants where before the finalists arrive, somebody gets up and sings a Mariah song.

    • Simon (to Kinnik): That's the sort of thing I would expect to see when I come off Magic Mountain in Disneyland. It was just a theme-park performance.

    • Simon (to Kellie): I think America, if they haven't already, are going to fall in love with you.

    • Simon (To Ayla): I think you are working probably harder than anyone I've seen on this show so far. ... If I said next week, we're going to juggle; you'd come back and juggle.

    • Simon (Paris): You don't want to turn this show into 'I'm 17, And I Can Sound 50'.

    • Simon (To fellow judge Paula Abdul, after she elbowed him while he was critiquing Melissa): Shut up, Paula, you really annoy me. It's like being with some precocious child!

  • NOTES (5)

    ADD NOTES
    • According to Heather the song she sang (Hero by Mariah Carey) had never been sung on American Idol before.

    • At the end of the episode when Ryan said bye the girls yelled out "Seacrest out!" That was Ryan's sign off for seasons three and four.

    • After Melissa's performance Paula and Randy switched spots and for the rest of the show Paula was on the far left (for the viewers at home) and Randy was in the middle. This is the first time Paula was ever on the end and Randy was in the middle.

    • Song choices for this episode were as follows: Katharine McPhee: All In Love Is Fair - Stevie Wonder Kinnik Sky: Here For The Party - Gretchen Wilson Lisa Tucker: Who's Loving You - The Jackson 5 Melissa McGhee: Why Haven't I Heard From You - Reba McEntire Heather Cox: Hero - Mariah Carey Brenna Gethers: Last Dance - Donna Summers Paris Bennett: Wind Beneath My Wings - Bette Midler Ayla Brown: I Want You To Need Me - Celine Dion Kelly Pickler: Something To Talk About - Bonnie Raitt Mandisa: Cry - Faith Hill
