  • A night of the classics

    "Great"
It's great to see Tony Bennett mentoring the Idols this week. I was expecting an exciting show this week, and I can say that I wasn't let down (with the exception of one or two performances). Here's my review:-

    1) BLAKE - His vocals sounded much better tonight and his performance was very entertaining. I enjoyed seeing this side of him (aside his beat-boxing and scatting). I am impressed that he's very versatile. (7/10)

    2) PHIL - Gosh, what happened to him? His performance this week was less than mediocre. Didn't do anything for me and I actually yawned halfway through the song. Don't think he'll be safe tomorrow. (5/10)

    3) MELINDA - Once again, blew me away! I always enjoy watching her sing coz her face really lights up whenever she's performing. Fantastic vocals! (9/10)

    4) CHRIS R.- Although all 3 judges thought it was his best performance, I didn't think it was THAT great. It was just ok for me. Is it me or is he looking more and more like a wannabe JT? Neh, I dont think his vocals are strong but he sure has stage presence with his showmanship. (7/10)

    5) JORDIN - OMG, her vocals were great! She's fun to watch coz she shows a lot of personality whenever she performance. Love her! (9/10)

    6) GINA - Her vocals were just ok, not as strong as the other girls. It was nice to see a softer side of her though. Just an average performance. (6/10)

    7) SANJAYA - Oh my, I am speechless. Although, I have to admit that he's improving and showing more of his personality on stage. However, his vocals are still not good enough. Why is he still in the competition? (4/10)

    8) HALEY - Can her skirt get any shorter?? Anyway, much better vocals this week. The song brought out her personality and she had fun. However, don't see her being in the Top 3 finalist. Above average performance. (6.5/10)

    9) LAKISHA - Great vocals once again. Performance-wise, I thought she could have toned it down a little bit coz she looked so angry with such a great love song. Anyhow, she's still a strong contender. (8.5/10)

my prediction for bottom 3: Sanjaya (cross fingers), Phil & Gina
Eliminated : Phil (sorry Phil, but you sucked a bit. Plus, Sanjaya has votes from u know where)moreless
  • Is it just me?

    "Bad"
In an average to underaverage season (Sorry producers) Phil comes across as an average to underaverage performer. Not a bad voice, not at all. I just ... can't seem get past the lack of hair.

Baldness works with dark skin. But pale? Guys. You really need to be a bouncer or a biker. Muscles are needed to keep you from looking like you're going through chemo-therapy. With a hat on, I find myself looking at Phil and thinking - good voice, nice eyes, not bad.

Without a hat, I see an elf.

    Or Nosferatu.

Might as well hand the crown to Ms. Doolittle right now.moreless
  • Superb: Melinda and Jordin. Great: Blake and LaKisha. Good: Chris and Haley. Fair: Gina and Sanjaya. Mediocre: Phil.

    "Good"
This week, our top 9 finalists get the help of superstar Tony Bennett! They choose songs from the "Great American Song Book," and hope to impress us all with their amazing voices.

Opening the night with his rendition of Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife" was Blake Lewis. Hoping to impress the judges with an amazing performance while doing out with the beat-boxing was obviously his goal and that goal was one he achieved. Blake gave a very jazzy vibe from his performance and it had the traditional, yet modern feeling like all his performances always seem to have. It was a great performance by Blake. 8/10.

After the first commercial break was Phil, performing "Night and Day" by Cole Porter. When I heard Tony's comments on Phil's voice, I actually got quite excited on Phil's performance, but to my disappointment and I think the judges as well, Phil made a very mediocre performance. Sure, his vocals were fair, but the overall performance was very mediocre. The performance was also a little boring. He might be the one to go home this week. 5/10.

Superstar, Melinda Doolittle came right after Phil doing "I've Got Rhythm" composed by George Gershwin. Once again it was a superb performance by Melinda. I'm glad she didn't look as shocked as before because that just means she has grown more confident and has been feeling more confident with herself. It wasn't my favorite Melinda performance of all time, but the vocals were flawless and the performance was great. 9/10.

Chris Richardson came after the second commercial break. He did "Don't Get around Much Anymore" by Duke Ellington. The judges sure liked it a lot because of the modern vibe it gave, but I have to say I did not like it as much as the judges did. No doubt, it was a good performance, but I did not see all the excitement in it. It was much like all his other performances, and not even the best one for me. Again, don't get me wrong, it was good, but in my opinion just not as great as the judges said it was. 7/10.

Following up Chris was Jordin Sparks. She performed "On a Clear Day." Once again, she managed to pull off an outstanding performance. I really don't have much to criticize about it. The thing with her is, she is still young and she can manage to pull off that kind of performance. She hasn't even cracked under pressure yet! She really is a strong girl. 9/10.

Gina Glocksen was up next doing "Smile" by Charlie Chaplin. Overall it was a good performance. The vocals were OK and the overall performance was fair, but I would have expected a lot more from Gina. I still remember her performance from last week where she blew everyone away with The Pretenders' "I'll Stand by You." That was an unforgettable performance! Her performance this week lacked a lot of things. It was far from her best, but not really one of her worst. 6/10.

Hair guru, Sanjaya Malakar was up next. He performed "Cheek to Cheek" by Irving Berlin. His vocals were poor, but I have to say it was one of his best performances. If he can't sing, at least he found a way to entertain everyone. It was a fair performance, but poor vocal. 6/10.

Seductive, Haley Scarnato performed "Ain't Misbehavin'" by Fats Waller. Like most of Haley's performances it was very sexy. Her dancing and activeness on stage did not make her vocals suffer, but like the judges said, she could have done a lot better on a week like this. I still liked the performance a lot though. 7/10.

Last of the night was LaKisha Jones. She did "Stormy Weather" by Ethel Waters. Another powerful performance by LaKisha, but I think she could have done better. I think she could have done better by getting into Melinda and Jordin's level instead of Blake's level. I guess the competition isn't big enough for three divas. 8/10.

Bottom 3 Predictions: Phil Stacey, Haley Scarnato and Gina Glocksen. (I'd have Sanjaya there, but America has fooled me before.)

    Eliminated Predictions: Phil Staceymoreless
  • Goodbye, Phil.

    "Fair"
Okay, so Sanjaya Hung may have been worse because he couldn't hit some notes and his voice was weak compared to the others, but Phil was unforgiveably bad tonight.

Blake was bad. Horrible rendition of "Mac The Knife". Poor song choice for his vocals.

Chris was awful. When all he can sing is high notes, it wears me down fast. His problem is he's unable to sing the low notes so that they would contrast the high. No Contrast Chris.

Gina was good. A little too made up, but vocals were to quote Paula, flawless.

Haley was good even though the theatrics loooked cheap and third-rate.

Jordin redeemed herself this week and she's right back in top form.

LaKisha - what was that beginning? Those long drawn out notes. Almost laughable. One of her poorest performance, but a bad performance from LaKisha still outdoes all the guys.

Melinda did her standard one-note song with varying degrees of loudness. It was pleasing to listen to, but as usual, the judges way over-rate her.

    From bad to best:

Sanjaya and Phil tie on horrible, Chris and Blake tie for next worse, Lakisha, Melinda, Haley, Gina, Jordinmoreless
