Ryan read results for both boys and girls in the same section of the episode. Usually he does boys, then commercial and then girls and then commercial and then boys again etc. or vice versa. This isn't the first time he has done this, but it is rare for him to do so during the semis.
Ryan mentioned that over the two nights of voting 40 million votes came in.

This is the third season that there is an uneven amount of girls and boys in the finals. Seasons 3 and 8 were the other two. This would be the first time since season 3 that there are more girls than boys. There are 7 girls and 6 boys.
Ryan started off by revealing the Top 10 which were: Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina, Pia Toscano, Karen Rodriguez, Jacob Lusk, Casey Abrams, Thia Megia, Paul McDonald, Haley Reinhart, and James Durbin. Next the Judges revealed who would sing as a Wild Card and those were: Ashthon Jones, Stefano Langone, Kendra Chantelle, Jovany Barreto, Naima Adedapo and Robbie Rosen. Then the judges revealed that Ashthon Jones, Stefano Langone and Naima Adedapo were through making this the second time there was a Top 13 (Season 8 the other). For this episode a different judge would start the critique after each performance. After the first performance Steven critiqued first, after the second it was Jennifer and after the third, Randy, and went in that order.
In this episode Ta-Tynisia has a hyphen in her name, where previously there was none when shown.
Naima reveals that her name means exotic flower.
Pia got a standing ovation by all three judges, after her performance.

Due to Steven's unpredictable use of language, Ryan gave him a cut out of the American Idol logo on a stick to use when he swears. He actually used it a couple of times.
Actors Martha Plimpton and Garret Dillahunt, from the show Raising Hope were in the audience. Their showed aired right after this episode.
Ryan announced that people are now allowed to vote online as well as by calling or texting. How it works is the person has to log into the website and then use their Facebook account. Each account gets 50 votes per night.
For the first time the Semis are done on the same stage as the Finals. The stage has again been overhauled.
Ryan introduced the judges before the opening theme song for the first time ever.

After the Las Vegas round 40 contestants remained. At the end of the episode 5 people had been told they made Top 24 and 5 were told they did not. 30 contestants remain to find out.
