American Idol

Sunday 8:00 PM on ABC Premiered Jun 11, 2002 In Season

  • Season 1 Episode 21: What? Who? You're sure now?

  • The Bottom 2:
    2. Nikki McKibbin
    1. Tamyra Gray

    Eliminated: Tamyra Gray

  • The Group Number was a medley of Paula Abdul songs. The songs in the medley were: "Straight Up", "Opposites Attract", "Cold Hearted", and "The Way That You Love Me".

  • There were 15 million votes

  • Brian said last episode that the tour starts in Phoenix then Tampa Bay, but in this episode it was the other way around. The actual first city was San Diego, then Phoenix and Tampa Bay was later.

  • Season 1 Episode 22: Three Do Two

  • Just as Kelly comes out for her first performance the screen shows the website ( on msn) and that the phone lines are not yet open for about half a second, so it probably was a goof.

  • After Kelly's second performance Brian reads out her numbers. This is the only time in the series that a contestants number's are not read out by Ryan.

  • After one of the commercial breaks Ryan's mic was still off and the first part of his speech was cut off.

  • Season 1 Episode 23: Two More

  • The Group Number tonight was "Love Will Keep Us Together" by Neil Sedaka. Also all three performed one song from the previous night. Nikki performed "Black Velvet", Justin performed "Let's Stay Together", and Kelly performed "Without You".

  • They did not announce how many votes came in from the night before, but Ryan did mention that through the course of the season almost 85 million calls had been made.

  • This results show was a special hour long episode, where usually the results are only 30 minutes.

  • Due to there only being three contestants left there was no Bottom 3/2. They just announced that Nikki McKibbin had the lowest amount of votes. This is the first time ever that there is no Bottom 3/2.

  • Season 1 Episode 24: Showdown!

  • Simon and Randy both thought Kelly would win and Paula stayed neutral.

  • There were no video montages played before any of the songs, usually one plays before the first one.

  • Instead of the contestants going and sitting by the hosts after their song, they came to center stage (the exception was after Justin's last performance), which Ryan does in the newer seasons.

  • Will Young, who won Pop Idol, sang "I Get the Sweetest Feeling" by Jackie Wilson which he sang during the competition during the Top 3 week as the Judges' Choice.

  • The judges sat up in a special box, instead of right in front of the stage as usual. They also did not critique each performance, instead at the end they gave their overall impression of the two contestants

  • Season 1 Episode 25: EL FINALE!

  • The following is a list of all the special performances tonight, with some special notes on some of them.
The Top 10 sang a 60's medley. The songs in the medley were: "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)" by Betty Everett (Only the girls sang this song), "California Girls" by The Beach Boys (Only the boys sang this song), "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" by Nancy Sinatra, "A Fool In Love" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Piece of My Heart" by Janis Joplin, "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You" by Marvin Gaye, "The Look of Love" by Dusty Springfield (This song was written by Burt Bacharach, who was this year's only mentor), "Don't Make Me Over" by Dionne Warwick (This song was written by Burt Bacharach, who was this year's only mentor), "Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers, "Under the Boardwalk" by The Drifters, "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin, and "Happy Together" by The Turtles.
Justin Guarini-"A Moment Like This" (Original)
    Kelly Clarkson-"Before Your Love" (Original)
The Top 10 sang a Motown medley The songs in the medley were: "Dancing in the Street" by Martha and the Vandellas, "Get Ready" by The Temptations (Only the boys sang this song), "If You Really Love Me" by Stevie Wonder (Only the girls sang this song), "I Can't Help Myself" by The Four Tops, "I'll Be There" by The Jackson 5, "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" by Stevie Wonder, "You're All I Need to Get By" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, "My Cherie Amour" by Stevie Wonder, "My Guy" by Diana Ross, "My Girl" by The Temptations, "With You I'm Born Again" by Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright, and then Will Young joined them on stage and sang "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, with Kelly (and after all the Top 10 joined again). Oddly, Kelly wound up winning so without anyone knowing they had the Winner of the first Pop Idol performing with the Winner of the first American Idol.
Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini-"It Takes Two" by Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston. This is the first time there is a duet between the Top 2. This becomes a tradition done in the finale of every season of American Idol (with the exception of Season 10, however the Top 2 performed together previously in the competition.)
Kelly Clarkson-"A Moment Like This" (Original). This was performed after she was announced as the Winner. Towards the end of the song the Top 30 joined her on stage.

  • When asked who they thought America voted for all three judges said Kelly.

  • This was a special two hour episode

  • Season 2 Episode 1: Start It Up!

  • 35 contestants from New York City made it to Hollywood, 20 contestants from Miami made it to Hollywood, and 36 contestants from Austin made it to Hollywood.
