Before the show started there was an incident with the stage. One of the giant American Idol signs fell over, and there was a lot of shattered glass. The contestants didn't get a full dress rehersal because of this.
This episode introduces a new aspect of the show, the Duet. There are no numbers on the screen, and are not shown in the recap, however the judges do critique them, and would obviously impact the voting.
Natalie Cole performed "Gotta Give Something", Taylor Hicks performed "Seven Mile Breakdown" and Jamie Foxx performed "Blame It".
The Group Number was "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" and "I Got Rhythm", which have both been covered by a multitude of artists.
The Ford Music Video was "Energy" by The Apples in Stereo. The Idols in Black and White run in slow motion towards a car and the car speeds towards them with a rainbow coming out the back, it comes close to them and then everything around becomes colourful.

After the group performance the girls and Matt still hadn't finished changing yet.
The Group Number was "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" by The Jacksons. Paula Abdul  choreographed the song. She introduced them and then at the end was given flowers.
There was a Disco Medley with Freda Payne singing "Band of Gold", Thelma Houston singing "Don't Leave Me This Way" and K.C. (From K.C. and the Sunshine Band) sang "Get Down Tonight". David Archuleta performed "Touch My Hands".
The Ford Music Video was "I'm Good, I'm Gone" by Lykke Li. The Idols all take up jobs. Anoop and Allison work in a cupcake shop. Matt, Kris and Danny work at a construction site. Lil and Adam work in a Pet store. All of them do poorly at the jobs. They all then meet up at a cafe after their work.

There were no clips before the performances, possibly because they kept going over time and needed a way to stay under.
