  • The true story of how one of the most brilliant and respected men in the American State Department, Alger Hiss, was accused of being a Communist agent and hounded by an ambitious young politician - Richard Nixon.moreless

The subject matter was still dynamite (and Hiss and Nixon were still alive) when this three-part series was first aired. Was Hiss guilty, and, if so, of what? He may have committed perjury, but was this simply because he was afraid of the right-wing paranoia of the time? Was he trying to protect his family from a scandal prefabricated by his enemies (his son may have been bisexual)? Even after Hiss's death (in the 1990s), the mystery has continued. Right-wingers insist that documents released after the end of the Cold War confirm his guilt, whilst leftists and liberals claim that similar documents prove his innocence. It was a terrific subject for TV drama, and this was very well done.moreless
