  • The Hiss case grows ever more strange, but eventually Alger Hiss is found guilty - of perjury, not spying - and his career in public life is over.

    9.5
Alger Hiss lived on into his nineties - he died in 1996 - and was eventually able successfully to overturn his disbarment from the legal profession, but, after a five-year jail sentence, he could never regain his former eminence. (For several years in the 1950s, he was forced to make a living as a humble paperclip salesman.) This three-part drama about him is a chilling portrait of paranoia in American life, and very gripping television; it's all the more effective for being so understated, and for not taking advantage of hindsight. Incidentally, Hiss's nemesis, Whittaker Chambers, was the first person to translate "Bambi" into English!moreless
