  • I saw this on stage at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and fell in love with it. But by adding substance to it only made it lose its charm.moreless

    7.5
The original show was advertised as a Choreopoem with each of the seven actresses in the show being referred to by the color of their leotard. There was no set just a large flower on the back of the stage. Each actress acted and danced (without music) out her scene. This was a wonderful cathartic show. I thought what it would be like as a movie with real sets. Unfortunately, I got what I wished for.

While this is still a wonderful exploration of being a black woman, it has lost some of its bit by giving us more. You lose the wonderful choreography and fluid motion for reality.

Nominee Trazana Beverly reprised her Broadway role with author Ntozake Shange. And Alfre Woodard reprised her award winning Mark Taper Forum performance.

The performances are incredible but not as powerful as on stage.moreless
