  • The quiet lives of several hidebound and conventional Americans are disrupted by the arrival of strangers - also Americans, but ones who have lived most of their lives in Europe and who have some definitely unusual attitudes.moreless

This wasn't a TV show at all, but a 1979 movie by the celebrated Merchant-Ivory team, who later gave us "A Room With A View" and "The Bostonians". It had been very well received in European cinemas then. It's a delightful comedy of manners, with a lovely central performance by Lee Remick as Eugenia, who is rumoured to be a princess (widowed) and who, with her scapegrace brother (a very lively performance by Tim Woodward), sets tongues wagging in the rather prim community to which she returns. One doesn't think of Henry James primarily as a comic writer, but this version of his novel is a delightful entertainment.moreless
