  • The show that introduced the granduer of Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy to the masses.

    10
Jessica Tandy won her third Tony Award for this show and Hume Cronyn received his fifth Tony Nomination for this show. (It was also nominated for Play and Director.)

But for many, this was the first time that we got to see these two together in leading roles. And what a chemistry they had!

This is a filmed version of the play that was shot during its London run. So it captures the original production exactly.

This is a story of two lonely soles who meet on the porch of a retirement home. They begin to play gin rummy together. Weller fancies himself quite a player and teaches Fonsia the game. But its Fonsia who keeps winning. During the games we get to know these two people until the final secrets are revealed in an intense finale.

This show was perfect for its two stars. DL Coburn wrote a brilliant play and Mike Nichols beautifully staged the show.moreless
