SENIORS DISCOUNTED NEWS

... NBC has canceled Betty White's Off Their Rockers after two seasons. The series featured senior citizens playing hidden-camera pranks on unsuspecting whippersnappers and pretty much sums up NBC. Imagine being the person who had to tell Betty White, America's sweetheart, that her show was canceled. You'd probably go home right after and immediately put a shotgun in your mouth. [THR]

BUSINESS TIME

... NBC is really banking on game shows, which jibes with its stress on bland, "broad" television. With the debuts of The Million Second Quiz and Hollywood Game Night already locked, NBC has added Wall of Fame with a straight-to-series order of eight one-hour episodes. There's a Hollywood Squares element to Wall of Fame, with teams of families answering pop-culture trivia and predicting which members of a celebrity panel also answered questions correctly. NBC has not announced a premiere date for the series, but hopefully the network will leave enough time to reanimate the corpse of Charles Nelson Reilly. [NBC via press release]

... Netflix is in talks to do a second season of Arrested Development, obviously. [Variety]

... Probably the 156th most exciting thing about Comic-Con is figuring out what shows will be on the thousands of free oversized bags handed out to attendees. This year, Warner Bros. TV will once again sponsor the enormous carryalls, and finding their way onto them will be Arrow, The Big Bang Theory, The Following, Revolution, Supernatural, Teen Titans Go!, and The Vampire Diaries. But this year, the bags will double as backpacks AND feature a detachable cape. Comic-Con: the only place where you can get beaten up for NOT wearing a cape. [WBTV via press release]

... CBS leads the nominations for the News and Documentary Emmy Awards. The network garnered 46 nods, with 60 Minutes out front with 24 nominations, followed by nine nominations for CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley and seven for CBS This Morning. The 34th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards will be presented on October 1. I know, I can't wait either! [CBS via press release]

... The two-hour finale for NBC's America's Got Talent will air on September 18 from 9pm to 11pm, where America's most-talented, and therefore the world's most-talented, person will be announced. [NBC via press release]

... Cinemax has slapped a date on the third-season premiere of Strike Back. Counterterrorist operatives Stonebridge and Scott will be back to blow sh*t up on August 9 at 10pm. [Cinemax via press release]

... Nickelodeon has ordered 20 more episodes of Sam & Cat, its number-one comedy. The live-action spin-off series follows a pair of girls from iCarly and Victorious who start a babysitting service and I bet it's funnier than Whitney. [Nickelodeon via press release]

CASTING NEWS

... Parks and Recreation will welcome a few House of Lies stars to its upcoming season, including one Ms. Kristen Bell. Bell and Ben Schwartz have each reserved guest appearances, with Bell playing a council woman who becomes Leslie Knope's nemesis, and Schwartz reprising his role as the cocky sleazeball Jean-Ralphio. No word on when they'll appear or whether they'll appear together or whether Don Cheadle will show up, too. Side note: You know what's still really weird? Parks and Recreation is NBC's only returning comedy. [THR]

... Former American Idol contestant and threat to conservative America Adam Lambert has been cast on Glee. Sounds about right, I guess. [Ryan Murphy's Twitter]

... Political Animals star Carla Gugino will star in the Fox limited series miniseries Wayward Pines from producer M. Night Shyamalan. The bizarre 10-episode thriller stars Matt Dillon as a secret service agent who ends up in the small town of Wayward Pines, Idaho, to investigate the disappearance of two fellow officers. But things get weird. Like, Shyamalan weird. Gugino will play the ex-partner of Dillon's character who lives in the town. No timetable has been set for Wayward Pines' debut. [THR]

that Sharknado interview was so great!

All of the questions I have about last night's Sharknado were answered once I saw the writer's name is Thunder Levin. Seriously, Thunder.

A lot of people in the comments seem to have misread the article. He said Parks and Rec was the only returning 'comedy' for NBC, and since Community Season 5 will, in all likely hood, not be funny at all, the statement is accurate.

There's an admitted writer on Sharknado? Jesus, that is brave. Oh, he's named "Thunder", never mind, that tells a lot, and this stuff is all he does. And apparently he's missed the part where a giant tropical storm in Los Angeles would be called a typhoon, not a hurricane. "Sharkphoon" sounds even stupider though. And now I am stupider for having read that, thanks Tim.

If Netflix does another season of AD, please let it be better than the last one. Also, it's time to do a release schedule, the buzz for the last season of AD shouldn't have faded this quickly.

The soulless minions of orthodoxy care not for Betty White's happiness, they would feel no guilt about cancelling her reality show. They'd just fire her, meld back into the faceless blob of executives, and at the end of the day separate from the blob and get into their BMW to drive home in rush hour traffic, feeling nothing, understanding nothing.

NBC has rolled the dice on game shows and will strangle them to dust like every other time.

The backpack giant bags hopefully get a redesign, they had too many points of failure and their poster tubes often ended up ripping the last 2 years. The detachable cape is a cute idea, but won't it cover their advertising? It'll probably be dinky to match Teen Titans Go's style.

I thought this show would last at least another ten years.

OMG....I've been torturing myself with glee ever since season 2.Just because you sometimes just wanna watch a show from A to Z. Season 1 was ok I guess, but dayum!! Ain't nobody gonna have me watch adam lambert. Eww...and I'm not even conservative! So yeah...no more glee for me! Sigh of relief that is! Just hope Ryan Murphy keeps American Horror Story classy! Although I still can't believe that maroon thing was casted in season 2.

Maroon thing?

I actually had to google it! The singer from maroon 5. You know...the horndog who kicked the bucket very early on the show?

Well, Betty White will still be on Hot in Cleveland, and i think it will be awhile before it is cancelled.

No. Adam! Ryan Murphy will taint your good reputation. :o That man is poison.

Also, really? Sounds like Silent Hill as written by Shyamalan.

Lol, that interview is the best thing I've ever read. Ever.
How has it taken this long for Adam lambert to be cast on Glee? He was even on PLL before this, and Glee is way more horrendous than PLL.
One day, I will make it to Comic-Con. One day...

I like Betty White, and I liked Off Their Rockers in season 1... but I stopped watching season 2 about halfway, it was the same pranks over and over from season 1. it got extremely boring. even Wipeout changes every once in a while.

Kristen Bell on Parks and Rec? hells yes.

ugh seriously, Adam Lambert? I've stood by the show even when it got crappy this year but Adam Lambert is going too far, he's a horrible singer and probably an even worse actor. I know I definitely won't buy any song he's singing on. I don't feel like being yelled at in songs.

Oh, Comic-Con, why must you be so far away and so very expensive? Oh well, I make it there some day (hopefully).

KBell playing Leslie's nemesis on Parks and Rec is especially great since KBell played Adam Scott's girlfriend on Party Down.

I love Betty White, but Off Their Rockers was awful, and she probably knows that. This isn't her first cancellation by a long shot, and it may not be her last.

The first couple of minutes of the first episode was kinda funny, but then you realized it was going to be more of the same thing over and over and over. I love her too, but I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. Of course it's NBC, so there was no predicting.

I thought the show was very, very funny!

I agree, although not always but most of the times. Anyway it's BETTY WHITE, and she is on her way out, for her the network should keep the show and free of charge!

Off Their Rockers, in general, actually did well during regular season and now that it's summer with everything mostly repeats, ratings have dropped a bit, but I believe they are still better than what other NBC comedies were getting. As usual with the networks, let's discriminate by not having a single show for older folks that doesn't attract enough 18-year-olds.

Sam and Cat is annoying. I never saw their respective other shows either. Hate to admit it, but I like Wendell and Vinnie although it seems Nickelodeon is not supporting it much by bouncing it around and running repeats of late.

"Strike Back" is probably the most underrated, underwatched show on TV. Brilliant stuff.

While I enjoy both Betty White's recent shows, I like Hot in Cleveland a lot more than Off Their Rockers. I can't imagine someone her age working so much, even if she appears quite healthy and chipper - Love you Betty White! <3

Hope Arrested Development gets another season.

I'll try out Shyamalan's Wayward Pines only because you wrote that it's a mini-series - those seem to get better endings than regular series, especially when they sound like a Twin Peaks type show.

I really, really, really, really, really, really (x10000000), REALLY hope that Netflix picks up another season of Arrested Development. I loved this last season, and want to see where the story goes from here.

That being said, as much as I loved the new format, I do hope that they work things out so that the main cast appear in a lot more scenes together.

There is this other little NBC show called Community that's also returning, remember.

Good news for Arrested Development. I hope next season they go back to an ensemble focus as the one-character-at-a-time thing didn't totally work for me.

Why do people keep giving Shyamalan jobs. He has made two good movies and that is it.

Also woohoo on Strike Back.

The Sixth Sense is classic. Signs was good. I thought Unbreakable was underrated. The Village was ok. Lady in the Water pissed me off so damn bad. The Happening was just f***ing ridiculous. After that I gave up on him.

The sixth sense is a classic. Unbreakable is a masterpiece. Signs is great. Village is ok. Lady in the water, The Happening, The last airbender and After Earth are pure garbage.

The thing that really bugged me when Unbreakable came out was that they advertised solely a thriller when imo it works a lot better as an homage to comic books and super hero movies.

I like the concept the Sharknado writer could have with SharkNATO...paramilitary sharks poised to stage a military coup and the only thing that can stop them? Killer Whales!!...brilliant!!!...lol...
